I happen to have a picture of a tower in central North Dakota that
illustrates this (somewhat...notice the ATU house).

That would be one of the self supporting towers at KFYR in Bismarck.  The
main tower is 768 feet tall and the base insulators are elevated above the
ground on the concrete piers.  The two tower array was constructed in 1939
near Menoken N.D.  The 550 KHz signal is heard in 5 states and 2 Canadian
provinces.  During World War II it was used as a radio compass signal for
the Lend Lease flights to Russia.  The transmitter operators were issued
weapons by the U.S. Army to guard the transmitter site.  I worked at KFYR-TV
from 74 until 86 and used to help out at the AM and FM sites.  Lots of
history here back to the 20's when KFYR AM started.  Was owned by the Meyer
family until the late 90's when the radio and TV operations were sold off.
