I would not go so far as to equate the righties you mention to Sen. 
McCarthy (no relation thankfully.)

What Sen. McCarthy did was to use the government power to pry into the 
private dealings of people who did not have any direct formal influence of 
the government. Unlike the judiciary which is part of the three arms of 
government and CAN have a direct and immediate impact, private political 
activities do not.  Sen. McCarthy's actions were highly UN-American in 
general despite their wel meaning intentions of preventing communism from 
spreading here.

Now, the televangelists of whom you speak are as outspoken as any Hollywood 
actor was/is.  However, we are not tarring and feathering the focal points 
like McCarthy's commission did.  Even Harriet will go back to private 
practice and make a killing despite the fact she was shown to be not 
equipped for the position.

Lets not confuse the two....
