IMO the "local competition" part of phone service is just plain stupid.
Local wired telephone service is a natural monopoly. So is electrical
service, but that's another thread. To offer local wired phone service, you
have to put in the infrastructure--and it's a waste of good copper wiring to

duplicate that service 3 or 4 times over just so someone else has the
capability to provide you with dial tone.

Local telephone service should be considered a monopoly, and regulated by
the State, as it was early on.

My rant for the day.

In Atlanta they have been experimenting with seperate gas companies and
electric companies. Eventually they might try water. But I bet they won't
compete on sewer!!

Many cities need some competetion there. It seems to be spend spend spend
and raise rates, raise rates, raise rates. Waste water is a big busness and
they build palaces when they build. But nobody wants it because it is a
*****y job.
