We were an RCA house up until the mid 80s, my impression of RCA
VTRs compared to Ampex, was that the RCAs broke more often, but were
easier to fix than the Ampex machines at our competitors.

We had a TCR-100 for about 10 years 77 to 87. It absolutely needed about
4 to 5 hours a week of dedicated downtime for maintenance. And it still
required one or two bouts of emergency maintenance a week. We had the
Sunday op make a dub reel for Monday morning, and pulled our PM on it then.

As far as a nickname, we never gave it one. I had heard that some places
called it "The Tractor".

I used to work at a TV station that had an ACR 25. We called it Jaws
because it liked to eat tape. Really would take a bite out of the
breaks when it did that. It also would at times not see the SOT hole
and unreal the tape off the hub. Even with alll of it's problems, it
still worked better than it's RCA counterpart at a sister station. I
believe they called their machine Cart-a-Sauris.
