No, Zenith had WEFM 99.5....classical for years competing
with both WFMT 98.7 and WNIB 97.1

After Zenith sold the station to, I think a broadcast
subsidiary of General Cinema, they had a fight with a listener's
group - after after a brief time with Top 40, reverted back to
classical.

This back in the 70s.

Subject: [BC] Re WFMT original owner

Wasn't WFMT originally WGNB owned by the Chicago Tribune. This would have
been back in the mid to late '40s, after the FCC moved the FM band to 88-108
MC but before -FM suffixes were allowed on FM call signs. FMs had to have
four-letter calls that were distinct from the calls of co-owned and
colocated AMs (hence WGNB). I think Tribune tired of FM really early on and
sold the station to Zenith, which changed the calls to WFMT and either
inaugurated the Fine Arts format or continued that format, which had started
when the station was still WGNB. It wasn't until more than a decade later
that the station was donated to WTTW.
