Typically, at Gates, the letter suffix indicated an ECN
or engineering change notice. It is not always correct
to say that an ECN represented an improvement, but that
was the intent.

The M5548 was a ubiquitous PS/Monitor Amp/Relay assembly
used at Gates with tube type units of the 1960's and
late 1950's. I can't recall the Yard, because I never
really worked on one before I worked at Gates, but I
know the 5548 was interchangeable between Dualux, Gatesway
and Studioette. At most, the one for the Yard might have
had one less studio muting relay since Yards were intended
mainly for production use. Regardless, that should not
present a problem to using the board unless you are trying
for some arcane degree of authentic assembly. By the time
I arrived at Gates Quincy after spending time at ATC in
Bloomington we were already well into the second generation
solid state boards, mainly the nightmare called the
Gatesway II.
