>>Build out NWS which can dispatch emergency messages much more efficiently
than broadcast OR let XM or Sirius do it. They already have the coverage.

I say, let XM and/or Sirius do it until the NWS can build out. They can
market a special receiver that all you do is program in a SAME code(s) and
hook it to a sat antenna. Radio shack could sell it for the cost of a NWS
radio. Or incorporate a NWS and sat radio into one unit and it monitors
both services for redundancy. It tunes in the channel and sits silently
until a message comes across for your area. Then it goes bonkers to get
your attention.

>>The broadcast model is SOOO out of date. We all know that
broadcasters independently will deliver better and more in depth info but
the
initial alerting could be done so much better without depending on broadcast
relay.

Some broadcasters feel compelled by the public service clause to deliver
better and more in depth information. However others, particularly in
larger cities, are more compelled to watch the bottom line and keep
shareholders happy. Which means on weekends and on overnights/holidays
there's nobody watching the store. And if the EAS machine isn't programmed
right, Armageddon could be happening and you'd still be hearing "50 minutes
of lite rock favorites" on the radio.
