That's true....

I remember there was a company selling HD erasers at NAB a couple of years
ago. It was a big box that you put a HD in and it exposed it to a mini EMP
pulse.  Destroyed the drive and wiped the disks clean.
It was the only kind of HD erasure that was approved by the military.

EMP destroys the base/emitter and/or base/collector junctions of
transistors.

Tube equipment is immune.

If the attack was specific to the Clarke belt it would be roughly 23,000
miles up. If that high, terrestrial effect would be somewhat reduced vs.
the effect at 200 miles.
