A couple of signals I check out whenever I'm in Da Burgh:
WJAS 1320 may yet turn out to be the last standards station standing. Their
morning guy is a Pittsburgh institution, Jack Bogut, who's literally doing
the same show on WJAS in 2005 that he was doing on KDKA in 1968. Corny, and
probably an acquired taste for anyone who's not a native Pittsburgher...but
different, anyway.
Suburban AMs WKHB 620 and WKFB 770 are largely leased-time...but when
they're not leasing time, they're being programmed by my pal Clarke Ingram
as a pretty good homage to early 70s AM top 40. Sometimes Clarke even takes
the mike for a live shift or two, at which point, if you close your eyes,
it may as well be 1973.
On the FM dial, WYEP 91.3 is a very good AAA outlet, if you're into that
sort of thing. The rest of the commercial dial is pretty generic.
It's also a great tower town - several big AM DAs in the North Hills,
including the 8-tower (2x4) 970 site in a cemetery (!), and some venerable
self-supporters on Mt. Washington, across the river just south of downtown.
