The link will take you to several pics of both the day and defunct nite site
of WDMN 1520 Toledo. Scroll down to WDMN 1520 to see the links. The photos
were taken by Fred Vobbe whom many of you know of Lima, OH, and I was the
pilot of the photo plane. Notice all the vines growing up those 6 towers
south of Toledo. It would be a great field day site for hams... There are
lots of other great pics of Toledo and Southern Michigan stations there too.

Subject: [BC] Closest US Class B AM to a co-channel US Class A AM

Both WDMN near Toledo OH and WBIX near Boston are "behind" the patterns of
co-channel Class As--WDMN protects and receives incidental protection from
WWKB. WBIX is in a similar situation with respect to KYW. The statement was
made (by Peter) and seconded (by Scott) that WDMN (and its predecessors), at
a distance of 257 miles, is the shortest spaced of any US Class B to the
co-channel Class A. Not so! WBIX, at 248 miles, appears to be the record
holder by nine miles. As noted in the previous messages, WDMN, in its
previous incarnations, used two sites but now uses only one. WBIX uses
separate day and night sites. The day site is triplexed (with WKOX and
WSRO); the night site is diplexed (with WAMG).

Now, it's true that WDMN's predecessors may have held the shortest-spacing
distinction for many years--I think 1520 in Toledo first signed on in the
'50s. WBIX's first predecessor, WGTR, didn't sign on at night until 1981 and
a series of owners tried for more than 15 years to get the night array to
work. The station eventually went dark and the magnificent five-tower
in-line array (540' towers were used to minimize high-angle skywave
toward KYW) was taken over by what is now WAMG and used to protect WLS and
first-adjacent WCBS. It was only about a year ago, that WBIX began operating
again at night after an extensive rebuild of the WAMG facilities. (See
Scott's tower-site of the week for a week or two ago at fybush.com.)

The post-script, as most readers of this list probably recall, was that
immediately following an expensive party that clebrated the start of night
service, Brad Bleidt, WBIX's owner-about-to-be (or so we all thought), sent
tapes to business associates and the SEC confessing to massive fraud in the
operation of his financial-planning business and theft of approximately $30
million from his clients. Bleidt unsuccessfully attempted suicide and is now
in prison awaiting sentencing. Meanwhile, previous owner Alex Langer, who
had received only partial payment for from Bleidt, is awaitng return of the
station's license, which the bankruptcy court awarded to him as one of
Bleidt's few secured creditors.
