According to my old boss at KRUX in Phoenix, he gave Joe his start doing a
talk show from some local nite club (sponsered by a Chevy dealer). As Joe
refused to stop referring to Barry Goldwater as BarryBilgewater, he was
eventually handed his "walkin' papers",  given the local politics of the
time.
The station had traded-out a Corvette for Joe as part of his deal : given
the dismissal news, Joe promised the boss that he'd give him 10% of all
future income if he could take the Corvette with him  :  the GM regretfully
passed on his offer...
