Back in the 90's a bud and myself were
fooling with equipment
and conversing loudly about other people
and activities in the transmitter hut
at WJCR-FM Upton KY. Carrier on and dead
audio the 20KW TTC's exciter
carried the conversation pretty well
with it's very microphonic PLL.
Especially the loud laughs. Probably
had more listeners and with the volume
cranked
max than they ever had with programming.
Talk about dynamic range....

"Back in the late '70's, a college
station I volunteered for had a Cetec
exciter/250 watt SS transmitter. One
night they were off (carrier on but no
audio) for naintenance and I was at the
tx wanting to calibrate the Moseley
TRC-15 remote control with the station.
I called and called the studio on the
phone but no one answered. Finally, in
frustration, I cupped my hands over the
front of the exciter and yelled: "Call
the transmitter!". 30 seconds later the
TX phone rang. They had heard me loud
and clear on the air monitor....

Got microphonic?"
