The great Jim Wulliman has a great response to complainers:

DON'T GET MAD...GET INVOLVED!

With the complaints about the SBE flying, one pointed question has been
posed to the people making the complaints:
What are you doing to change things?

It appears that the answer is complain.

I can comment on some of the recent points that have been raised. These are
my opinions.

>I would expect the organization to have [its] job listings posted when [it
>says]
>they should be...and be current.

The JobsOnline is updated every week. Because the info is posted by a member
volunteer, there are rare occassions where the info is delayed by a few
days. The listings are as current as the information supplied to us.

>time I go to a job interview for a TV CE position and get asked: How much
>DTV
>experience do you have I can answer: "Well, I received SBE training on
>DTV",

Perhaps you should attend some Ennes sessions or look at some of the books
in the SBE bookstore.
Also, "coming up" with training materials is not a simple task. The SBE is a
volunteer organization. Would you like to volunteer to crate these
materials? That would also be a great item to add to you resume, and it
would certainly show that you know DTV.

>I would expect things like group life insurance plans, and
>health insurance ones too.

An insurance plan needs multiple participants to make it finacially viable
to the participants. To my knowledge there has not been sufficient interest
in these types of insurance to make an SBE offering competitive. If others
would like it, let the National Office know.

>I would expect REAL reference materials to be available for those who
>choose to go into contracting.

Please be more specific.

>I would expect some kind of salary survey so when I'm asked: "What are you
>looking for",
>I can know the average salary for that market. I want to know what
>contracting rates
>are too.

To get an accurate analysis of average salries requires requires a large
sample. The NAB conducts a salary survey. So does Radio magazine. The Radio
magazine survey asks about Certification and it provides contract
engineering rates. While we ask nearly 12,000 people to participate, only a
small percentage replies. This makes providing accurate data difficult.
Also, a slaray in Ft. Wayne, IN, is going to be different than Los Angeles.
Keep in mind that any division of the data (large market/small market) can
make the results more unreliable by reducing the sample universe.

>In other words, I'm looking for the SBE to give me the same things that a
>member of just about every other professional organization gets as a matter
>of
>course. Is this so unreasonable?

It's not unreasonable, and I believe that the SBE provides much of what you
ask when it is practical. Can I send you that membership application?

vice president, SBE
editor, Radio magazine (disclosure for the salary survey item)
