I worked in a similar situation years ago in St. Louis. That station is now 
owned by Emmis... problem solved.

I knew of a station in Boston that had their bank in New Hampshire so they
could use the float to cover the (bad) paychecks they gave out...

I guess they cleared - Most of the time!

  So, you've worked in northeast Louisiana or was that Modesto,
California? I've handled THAT particular job in both of those parts of
the country...

  Seriously, I suspect that I know some of where you're talking about.
Here's to hoping that you have better experiences in the Great Gulf
South than I've ever had! (Hint: in the case of the smaller stations -
not including major groups such as your primary employment, cash the
checks at THEIR BANK and no less...)
