On the subject of Heathkit and 6146's...

I once recall the story of a now reputable engineer who, in his senior year
of high school, happened by a DX-100. He had a crystal for 1412 Khz and an
80 meter dipole strung between two tall trees in the back yard. Having been
offered a job as a stringer for the news dep't of a local station, this
talented individual wanted to start his own station. Since most of his
classmates didn't know where or how to tune 1412 Khz (this was in 1972-73)
he had the brilliant idea of 'dial dominance'. He told everyone to tune
around 14 on the AM dial and adjust for the clearest signal without the
sirens (2 Khz whistles).

He modified the screen voltage regulator to be a 10 Khz oscillator which in
turn made his station appear at 10 Khz intervals all over the dial. His ego
was tremendously boosted the morning following his first broadcast when a
classmate told him "I heard the sirens, all the other stations faded away
the I heard your voice and then the music".

This story is, of course, purely hypothetical and any similarity to actual
persons or events is purely coincidental.
