Rachel, good question, and lots of room for a big wide answer. As always,
the answer begins with this question... why are you buying? Are you a
broadcaster, passionate about all aspects of this business? Are you an
investor, looking for someplace to park & grow your money? Is there an
underserved market that you can superserve? Is that niche big enough to
allow you to pay you note and make a profit?

There's always reasons to not buy. Competition's so much tougher and comes
from so many different directions than it did 25 years ago when I got into
the business. The high cost of digital conversion is at least a
consideration on the horizon. If you're a mom&pop, you gotta compete with
the deep pockets of the big groups.

I bought my stations 10 years ago. I do at least 60 hours a week, but I
still love my job most days. I spent most of the holiday yesterday at work,
putting together the program for our fireworks show last night. I'm blessed
to be able to work in small market radio, where people appreciate a good
local station.

Would I buy a 500 watt daytimer AM in a market with 30 other signals? Not
unless I knew there was a serious niche to be filled. Not unless I was
absolutely committed to creating a jewel of a station. Not unless I was
passionate about what I wanted to create, and knew how to put it together
and keep it running. Certainly not if I was simply looking for an
investment.

But I sure am glad that I got the chance to buy a couple of really bad
stations and build them into something really special... and in a small town
that I've grown to love.
